The Fourth of July holiday usually raises thoughts of big barbecues with family and friends, community picnics and local firework displays.   Rarely, if ever, does it spark ideas of a romantic evening for two.  However, the holiday offers a great opportunity to take advantage of having some downtime from the daily grind, the wonderful summer climate and a reason to have dinner under the stars.

Of course it all starts with the atmosphere.  Whether it’s a rooftop escape or your backyard, the right lighting can set the mood.  Chinese lanterns, candles, or even soft white Christmas lights can add a lovely backdrop.  So as to not forget to show your patriotism, the tablescape can be used to reflect the day’s theme colors with red roses for the centerpiece, blue melamine dinnerware and luxe white linen tablecloth and napkins.

For the meal, instead of burgers and dogs, serve up a grilled menu that is sure to please your sweetie.  Flank steak with chimichurri sauce, grilled oysters or barbecued chicken breast with pepper peach relish are just a few ideas that come to mind.  And, don’t forget the dessert.  Cap off your meal with a mouth-watering chocolate soufflé, cheesecake with seasonal fruit, or raspberry-filled S’mores while you watch the fireworks display on a television screen set up outside.

Nevertheless, with a night like this, you are sure to set off your own fireworks display. So, for once, let tradition take a backseat for your celebration of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness!
